Dear Rooted friends, I’m Danuta, a film archivist at Beeld en Geluid (beeldengeluid.nl), where I’ve spent the last 14 years preserving the Netherlands’ audiovisual history. Our archive is a massive, living cultural memory, housing everything from early radio broadcasts to modern viral videos.
During your visit, I want to show you the “hidden” side of our work. We’ll dive straight into the heart of the building, exploring our vaults filled with vintage media tech and visiting the digitization department. You’ll get a sensory experience with analog film (scent and all!) while seeing how we preserve magnetic tapes and VHS for the future. We’ll wrap up with a look at our interactive media museum. I will tell you about how we are actively striving to fill historical gaps by including the narratives and voices that were previously excluded from the national record.
